2007 world champ Mick Fanning has been nursing a two-year hangover.

Congratulations on winning the 2009 Hurley Pro Trestles and Quiksilver Pro France, mate. If you hadn’t won, your season was basically over. Now you’re ranked number one in the world again.
I feel like I’ve been in form all year, but things weren’t falling into place. But that’s part of it. I was sort of fluffing around a little bit, too. I didn’t set strict goals or anything like that until the week before Hurley.

Are you still partying from 2007 when you won the Tour?
Yeah, I think I still had the hangover! I put so much in through 2006 and 2007 and I sorta just let loose. All through 2008 I just wanted to enjoy the tour and, coming into the start of this year, I’d put my mind to winning the world title but I didn’t become strict on myself. I feel now like I’ve got a really good balance. I can still have fun with a few tunes a couple of hours before my heat and then still be focused when it’s time.

You’re good mates with Joel Parkinson. He had a great start to his year but has had a tough run lately.
That’s just surfing. You either get the waves or you don’t. It’s bad luck he had that ankle injury coming into the busiest section of the tour. But he’s a tough guy and he’ll suck it up.

All the surfers share VIP tents at events, right?
Yeah, at Hurley especially, they block us all off and there are wives and girlfriends and kids running around. We’re like a travelling family — a bunch of circus freaks.
