Highway to hill

Wednesday, May 27, 2009
After a year off, Aussie downhill mountain-biking legend Mick Hannah is back for a world title.

Do you get a rush from downhill racing?
Your first couple of runs can be if it’s a hard track, but by race time, you know the track so well and it’s so calculated, it takes the rush out of it. If you’re getting a rush, it usually means you made a few big mistakes.

So there’s more to it than hammering down a hill?
Yeah, for somebody who’s not into it, it just looks like a bunch of crazy guys rushing down a hill, but there’s quite a bit to it. The top 10 or 15 guys never really take a risk – everything is done within what our limitations. The idea is to finish the race, ’cos you can’t get any result if you’re not finishing.’

Have you had many injuries?
I broke my collarbone when I was 17, in my first season, and I’ve also broken one of the little bones in my wrist and my little fingers a few times, but not really anything major.

How badly do people get hurt?
I’ve seen three serious spinal injuries in my career, all in the last two or three years. It’s generally not in the top few – it seems to be from around 20th world ranking to maybe 40th. That group of people who are close to breaking into the top ten sometimes push themselves a bit over the edge.

Is there a party scene on tour?
The top few guys don’t party that hard during the season. They usually have a bit of a bender at the end of the season and then start training for the following year.

Buy a downhill bike(second hand if you like), ask the local bike shops about where the nearest tracks are, and just hit it. the more you ride the better you get. and join a local club if there is one, that way you'll meet people to ride with.
you can join a local mountain bike club or rock up to local mountain bike tracks and tag along. Mountain Bike community is very friendly.
You should start by racing at the state downhill rounds. If your getting nice results, you might get sponsored or something like that. So yeah, but remember to enjoy it at the same time. A big thing to keep in mind is the price of these bikes too. Check out www.tbsm.com.au, THE BEST FREERIDE AND DOWNHILL STORE IN NSW. Its a fact.
Best way is to talk to the guys at your local bike shop (LBS) there is usually a summer racing season depending on your location. The guys at your LBS will be able to point you into the right direction.
Easiest way to get into the sport is to start riding. There isn't a whole lot in the way of downhill trails around Newcastle - Awaba has one that's a work in progress, and there are a couple of DH trails in Glenrock (although they're being closed off soon) - but there is a lot of cross-country riding to be done. If you hit up an MTB forum (www.rotorburn.com for Aust wide, www.twentysixinches.com or www.hmba.asn.au for Newcastle & Hunter) you can probably find a few people willing to show you the ropes. Eller
Jump onto - www.rotorburn.com and go to the forums area. There is lots of great information on all disciplines of MTB and the people there will be able to point you in the right direction.
Get on your bike and do some riding, then get in touch with your local MTB club. Your first place to contact might even be your local bike shop. Depending on where you are, most clubs will either be active with Downhill events or be able to point you in the right direction as to what other clubs are.
Umm, buy a bike and start riding the hills near your house. Do it on the weekends and after school-work. Before long it will be an obsession and then your hooked. Just train hard.
buy a bike and get out there!!!!
If you are keen to get involved check www.mtba.asn.au for a listing of all australian clubs.. Or, check www.rotorburn.com for the biggest australian mtb forum. It's an awesome sport... Get into it!!!
