Only moments before
Shane Warne the Musical kicked off, the audience were warned to leave their
mobile phones on in case you get any important text messages throughout the show.
It was comically refreshing to see Warnie's soap opera life on the big stage, starting from his young days as a bogan with a mullet at the AIS to becoming the world’s best bowler.
The show stars Eddie Perfect, a multi-talented writer/composer who also plays Warnie to a
can of VB. Apart from physically looking like the pantsman with the spiky “yeah yeah” hair, Perfect nailed the role with the spin king’s larrikin sense of humour.
It’s made humourously clear through song and dance, that Hollywood, as Warnie’s known by some of his cricket mates, didn’t give a rat's arse what the public thought of his persona and controversial actions.
Especially when the
Devil gatecrashes the party and tragically tells Warnie he’ll never be Australian captain. Warnie responds with, “If the public wants Ritchie Cunningham, I’m the Fonz" and in another song says "the only thing that matters is bringing back the Ashes.” Nice bowling, Warnie!
Perfect performs the hilarious jiggle with the wicket above his head and other rooting-style dances when Australia celebrates the Ashes victory over the Poms.
But the funniest scene is Warnie and Simone’s bridal waltz, where the Victorian leggie busts out more pelvic thrusts than Ron Jeremy at a sexathon, followed by a robotic rap dance, and Simone performs the caterpillar on the dance floor. If you thought Stifler's dance off in
American Pie 3 was a good laugh, this routine is just as good.
The couples on-again-off-again marriage is illustrated through piss-funny lyrics like, “What an SMS I’m in and I’ve got an erection in the frozen food section.” But in true Warnie form, he tries to woo Simone back by promising they’ll be bigger than Jason and Kylie and he’ll get her on
Dancing With the Stars.
Full credit also goes to the band and some of the stage props, like the massive blow-up schlong that symbolies his
threesome with two models while wearing his
Playboy undies.
