Classic Trans-Tasman Clashes

Thursday, May 7, 2009
RAPLH.com presents you some of the most memorable Trans Tasman clashes.

1981 One Day Cricket Match, MCG, Melbourne
With the Kiwis needing a six off the last ball to take the match, Australia's captain Greg Chappell took the gutless option, and told his brother Trevor to bowl underarm. Commentating on the match, Ian Chappell said from the box,”No Greg, you can't do that.” But he did, and dragged Australia’s rep for good sportsmanship through the mud.
Austraila won

1985 Rugby League Test, Lang Park, Brisbane
The result of this match is largely forgotten, and the ferocious sideline punch-up between Kangaroo Greg Dowling and Kiwi Kevin Tamati is what most people remember. Tamati has since said he wishes the series was remembered for the great football, rather than the ugly incident that he claims was spurred by racist sledging.
Australia won

1999 Netball World Championships, Westpac Centre, Christchurch
Who could ever forget the nail-biting clash at the Westpac Centre, in Christchurch, New Zealand. The Aussies downed the Silver Ferns after coming back from six goals down at three-quarter time. Sharelle McMahon’s final-second shot for victory placed her amongst the greats.
Australia won

2001 Bledisloe Cup, Game 2, Australia Stadium, Sydney
Australia hoped to send captain John Eales out a winner in his final test. They looked well placed at half time, with a 19-6 lead. Tries by Doug Howlett and Pita Alatani, and Andrew Merhtens boot, almost upset the plan, with the All Blacks leading 26-22. In the dying moments, Toutai Kefu scored a legendary try that secured Eales his fairytale ending.
Australia won

2003 Netball World Championships, Kingston, Jamaica
The Diamonds swallowed the bitter pill of defeat, when the Silver Ferns took the world title. The Ferns looked finished when centre Temepara George was sin-binned for continual offside. But when Temepara returned to the court she fired up the team, and grabbed a crucial intercept that helped secure victory for the Kiwis.
New Zealand won

2008 Rugby League World Cup, Lang Park, Brisbane
A year after they copped a 58-0 drubbing from the Kangaroos in Wellington and a three-test whitewash at the hands of the Lions, the Kiwis produced a stunning reversal of form. They downed the Kangaroos 34-20, obviously helped by the enlistment of super coach Wayne Bennett.
New Zealand won

I think that all sporting games and competitions played between Australia and New Zealand are really good as the games are usually exciting and so well contested, each side giving their utmost. These games are usually played very hard with no quarter given and to me it really dosn't matter who ends up winning, because I know I have watched a great sporting contest.
We are two countries that have been battling each other in sports for years.no other country has this we are also two countries who stood side by side in both world wars let us both be proud of this.and may our Trans-Tasman clash continue for years
