Anzac Day drinking

Thursday, April 23, 2009
After you've gone to an Anzac Day service and paid your respects, get to a bar and raise your glass in salute.

Brisbane
Breakfast Creek Hotel
Come for the view across for the river, stay for the award-winning steak, then stay a lot longer for the beer. Then hope you don't drink so much, that you come a cropper re-enacting a cavalry charge on a shopping trolley.

Story Bridge Hotel, Kangaroo Point
This historic hotel knows how to host a great event, whether it’s the Australia Day Cockroach Races or The National Festival of Beers. On Anzac Day, they’ll be putting on live bands, and promise “Traditional Anzac Day Activities.” Presumably that's drinking and gambling, rather than troop landings and shootings.

Sydney
The Australian Hotel, The Rocks
Play two-up on the biggest stage in Sydney at this iconic hotel in the Rocks. Just get stuck into the beaut beer and tops pizza before you lose all your money.

Newport Arms
Dine at the water’s edge in a beer garden so huge a small army could make camp there. With winter round the corner, it may be the last chance to enjoy the place without freezing your nuts off.

Melbourne
The Railway Hotel, South Melbourne
This is a classy pub, with a great beer garden that’s cosier than the biggest beer barns. It’s stylish and modern while retaining a traditional pub feel that would make any old soldier feel comfortable.

Esplanade Hotel, St Kilda
Our forefathers fought for the right to rock on, and The Espy is just the place to do that. In a world of pubs with chrome furniture and fancy toilets, it stands strong as a true Australian city pub, and still hosts about 50 bands a week.

Perth
The Cottesloe Beach Hotel

One of favourite pubs of just about every WA model who has graced the pages of RALPH, the Cott is packed with women worth going to war over.

Hobart
Customs House Hotel

Right on the waterfront, this flash joint is the first stop for thirsty Sydney-Hobart sailors. With 13 beers on tap, a snazzy restaurant and plush accommodation, it’s the place to enjoy the luxuries that were denied to those heroes in the trenches.

Canberra
The Uni Pub
This pub has five levels of drinking pleasure. Having a few beers on every level takes steely determination that would test the most battle hardened drinkers.

Darwin
The Vic Hotel

Like the diggers at Gallipoli, when you go to backpacker haunt the Vic, you’ll be in enemy territory, surrounded by foreigners. Thankfully, these hotties from the other side of the world are more inclined to root you than shoot you.
