Mr Brown

Sunday, February 22, 2009
True-blue actor Bryan Brown talks booze, footy and V8s.

Tell us about your new flick, Dean Spanley.

It’s about a father and son coming together. Sam [Neill] and myself play characters who were dogs in our past lives, and — whether you like it or not — we help them get to the stage of saying, “I love you” to each other.

Do you drink Aussie beer?
Yeah, I drink all beers.

What’s your favourite boozing session ever?
I got drunk at the final of the Rugby Union World Cup Final between Australia and England in 2003. I knew the players so I went back to the hotel they were all staying at and we drank till about 5am. Sam Neill was there and pushed me onto standing on a table and making a speech to the team.

What did you say?
I don’t really want to think about it. But there were a few swear words in it.

Your missus Rachel Ward is still pretty hot, hey?
Yeah, you’re right.

How did you woo her?
I just don’t think she had a chance. Simple as that.

What are your favourite possessions?
Aside from my three kids, there’s my mahogany red ’69 Statesman and mahogany red ’79 Statesman — that’s a pretty sharp old car.

Dan Steiner
