Around the world in 80 bars

Thursday, January 22, 2009
When on an international pub crawl, RALPH always chooses to fly thirst class.

AUSTRALASIA
Deschlers Bar
Auckland, New Zealand
Why drink there?
Award-winning bar known for its cocktails and live music in the heart of the Auckland city centre. The three-hour happy hour should do the trick.
What to order: Butternut rum cocktail.

NORTH AMERICA
Bordello
LA, USA
Why drink there?
Looks just like a bordello from the 1920s and puts on dancing girls, cabaret and classic burlesque shows. It’s even on the site of what was the oldest bar and brothel in downtown LA.
What to order: A classic Tom Collins.

SOUTH AMERICA
Adelita Bar
Tijuana, Mexico
Why drink there?
Their website says it all — “The beer is cold and cheap and there are plenty of available women”. Ole!
What to order: Tequila. And lot’s of it.

EUROPE
The Crown Bar
Belfast, Northern Ireland
Why drink there?
The Crown Liquor Saloon is a proper Victorian Irish pub. The Craic is second to none and the locals still love a drink here.
What to order: Guinness, you dumb arse.

SOUTH-EAST ASIA
Tiger Bar Complex
Phuket, Thailand
Why drink there?
A massive place filled with pole-dancers that goes off with a ton of bars downstairs and a disco upstairs. But just make sure you avoid playing Russian roulette with the lady boys.
What to order: Samgsom — Thailand’s finest rum.

AFRICA
La Med
Cape Town, South Africa
Why drink there?
This place rocks in summer or winter as an ocean-side and a mountain-side venue. Things can start mellow but it picks up into a full-blown party before you know it.
What to order: A Jägie Bull — one can of Red Bull and three shots of uncle Jäger.

CARIBBEAN
Hotel Nacional de Cuba
Havana, Cuba
Why drink there?
Its six bars have seen some pretty famous old-school celebrities having a drink, from Winston Churchill, Marlon Brando, Ernest Hemingway and Nat King Cole to US gangsters Lucky Luciano and Frank Costello.
What to order: Pina colada.

Now wouldn't one love to drink at each and every one of them! There an Aussie tour company that does tours to just pubs (and nothing else!) which include some of these, www.thirstyswagman.com their pub crawl to Asia is bloody unreal.
