From rugby to music, Pete Murray's all about big hits

After two number-one albums, are you nervous about your new one, Summer at Eureka?
I am anxious because there were things with the first two albums that I didn’t like – especially Feeler [Pete’s breakthrough album in 2003]. But everyone went nuts about it. I was just going, “F–kin’ hell.” I thought it was going to be f–ked but it worked. But this time I like the album. From start to finish, there’s nothing I’d change. So I’m wondering if everyone else is going to like it?

Was it weird getting so big so fast?
Yeah, nuts.

Because you’re a pretty regular guy, then all of a sudden you’re a rock star.
I’m still pretty regular. I started doing smaller shows – like 200 capacity. Then I remember playing Bar Broadway [in Sydney]. It was about 400-capacity, which was a big show for us. When we got there the place was packed and there was a line right down the road. I actually rocked up saying, “Is there something else going on here apart from us,” and they were like, “Nah, it’s just you.” It was daunting, but a good feeling.

User reviews
Not only did this guy used to play rugby, for which he scores maximum points from me but he can also sing a tune. He's in the same grain as Jack Johnson who's gone from surfing to singing but to see guys so talented, yet so humbled, is awesome. I have been a fan for a long time and it's not just because it scores me brownie points with my girlfriend!
