A Perfect Storm

Friday, March 28, 2008

Sailor Ron Llewellyn, 56, ended up in a world of shit with a broken mast when he capsized in extreme weather.

“I was doing my second solo circumnavigation of the world aboard my yacht Sula when I ran into trouble about 650km off South America. Three massive storm fronts were approaching so I prepared Sula and then headed down below.

Suddenly there was an incredible noise like a freight train coming right at me. A huge impact slammed into the yacht and I felt everything sliding sideways until I rolled. We all wonder about when we’re going to die and I knew this was it for me.

I’d been capsized and the cabin was filling with water. As I tried to grab hold of something I was flipped again and I knew things weren’t looking good. But there’s an old saying – “Only when there’s no hope of escape does fear evaporate.”
