State of Origin's toughest moments

Tuesday, June 15, 2010
The biggest slams from the biggest games the rugby league has ever seen.

Jaw-breaker
Game 1, 1983

The first majorly ugly incident of the '80s saw Les Boyd lead with his elbow as Darryl Brohman ran the ball towards him, smashing Brohman's jaw. Referee Barry Gomersall only penalised Boyd, but he later copped a year-long suspension.

Mud wrestle
Game 2, 1984

The field resembled a quagmire and a brawl erupted after the first tackle, with Chris Close getting his jumper ripped off in the punching, kneeing and wrestling. Noel Cleal’s goal-line drop-out get stuck in the mud, and Greg Dowling score a try after a chip-kick hit the crossbar.

It's raining beer
Game 2, 1988

A scrap involving Phil Daley and Greg Conescu escalated into an all-in. After they copped 10 minutes each, Wally Lewis was dismissed for five minutes for allegedly inciting the biff. The Lang Park crowd hurled beer cans onto the field, causing a brief stoppage.

Walking wounded
Game 2, 1989

Allan Langer broke his ankle. Mal Meninga exited with a fractured eye socked courtesy of a Peter Kelly punch. Paul Vautin copped an elbow injury. Michael Hancock left the field with a shoulder injury. And Bob Lindner played for a while with a broken bone in his leg.

Geyer on fire
Game 2, 1991

On half-time, a brawl erupted after Mark Geyer roughed up Steve Walters. Then, as Geyer and Wally Lewis faced off, referee David Manson had to stand between them. In the second half, Geyer elbowed Paul Hauff to the jaw, leading to another stoush.

Bloodbath
Game 1, 1992

One of the most lethal Origin games, it saw Steve Jackson suffer concussion, Bradley Clyde bone and ligament damage, Gary Larson concussion from a Paul Harragon swinging arm, Laurie Daley concussion, and Ben Elias a head gash that bathed his face in blood.

Staple viewing
Game 1, 2003

Michael De Vere suffered a cut above his right eye that was re-opened after a driving tackle, so a trainer inserted staples in the wound, which looked awesome on TV. Later, De Vere copped a swinging arm from Gorden Tallis and more blood spilled from his battered noggin.

It has to be Gary Larson....QUEENSLANDER, Hard Fair and consistent.A close second is the AXE Trevor Gilmister......
Toughest guy in State of Origin - Hard to pass over the king, never took a backward step as Mark Geyer will attest to and of course full-on Queenslander.
