The dodgiest World Cup moments

Friday, May 28, 2010
Our top stuff-ups from past Cups.

Becks' red card
David Beckham pretty much carried his side for a decade, but he did have the odd brain snap. In 1998, in a second-round game against Argentina, he kicked opposition defender Diego Simeone in the calf after being fouled himself. Beckham was sent off and the Poms lost the game in a penalty shootout.

Diego Maradona’s drug bust
In '94 in the US, Maradona was making an amazing comeback after missing a few years through a positive test for cocaine. For a man seemingly past it, he’d started with a bang with a goal in the first game. But the banned drug ephedrine was found in his system. He was sent home in disgrace.

The Battle of Santiago
The 1962 game between Italy and Chile was the most violent ever. The first foul occurred after 12 seconds. Police had to remove one player and intervene in on-field brawls three times as kicks were aimed at necks, and punches thrown, one of which broke a player’s nose.

That Italian penalty
There's an argument that Lucas Neill should have stood still in the penalty box in the Socceroos' 2006 second-round match versus Italy, but we still reckon the Italian bloke cheated. And if Fabio Grosso hadn't gone down, then who knows what might have happened? It still brings a tear to our eyes four years later.

Ronaldo goes missing
In '98, Ronaldo was the best player in the world. But 72 minutes before the start of the final, he was left off the team sheet. Half an hour later, he was back on it. He’d had a fit in his sleep and was rushed off for brain and heart tests. Understandably, he played crap and France won three-nil.

USA beats England
In a 1950 group match, the score finished USA 1 – England 0. The part-time Seppo squad, made up of posties and dishwashers, was at 500-1. The Pom papers thought the result was a misprint and assumed they’d won 10-0 or 10-1. Even 60 years later, the Yanks beating the Poms at soccer still makes us laugh.

Maradona's Hand of God.
Anyone who knows anything about soccer can tell u that u cant trip a player in the box as he is about to kick. If u look at the play ,Lucas slid past the ball not even touching it. Lucas is a cheat and didnt get away with it. As for Australia winning the world cup in 2006, dont make me laugh.
It surely must be Maradona's "Hand of God" goal against England in the 1986 quarter-final! Everyone seemed to see it except the referee!
Any Soccer Game only one thing I hate to watch are Unfair Refferee is thats any rule with FIFA not allowed to complaining with refferee attitude because look like nobody or player can complaining agains the refferee
Yes, the Socceroos were robbed. If it hadn't been for that Italian cheating, we could have won the game. The ref cheated too!
Are you a pom? or has this been lifted from a pommy article? your article is very pro England, Beckham deserved the Red, and the USA deserved to beat the poms, niether were dodgy, whats dodgy is the way that England stole the world cup in 66, that was dodgy, and its also dodgy that the poms claim to have invented football, which is total rubbish, and have a foreigner in charge of their national team... thats dodgy for ya.
The Penalty was fair, Lucas Neill fell over infront of an attacking player in his own penalty box, he lay flat right in the path of Grosso, if you ask me Lucas was foolish and deserved what he got, the Italians had a man unfairly sent off in that game, I notice you don't have that in your list of dodgy deeds, the socceroos should of capitalised on the man advantage, but they didn't, so get over it mate, move on, the Socceroos have a lot more pressing issues at the moment.
Seriously... Who cares about soccer anyway...? or football... or whatever you feel like calling it. What is truly annoying about this article is that for a sport that is playing by millions upon millions of people and draws a bigger crowd than most other televised sports combined... these are the only comments your reporters can come up with? AND THEN relies on the reading public to fill in the gaps. What's wrong Ralph? Trying to jump on the soccer bandwagon because the world is going to battle in less than two weeks? Falling ratings because this non-soccer loving nation is suddenly reading other publications are printing better researched articles? Stick to *** and ***, probably all your good for
Still on about it. But watch Lucas Neill's body language when the penalty was awarded. He wasn't angry with the ref or the Italian - just ashamed of himself. He lay down in the penalty area and stopped the player from getting at the ball, and it was a clear penalty. Let's start being honest and get over it. Serves us right for not trying to win when we had a 1 man advantage.
Im sick of hearing about how unfair it was to lose to Italy and that Fabio Grosso cheated. If the part time soccer fans look at the replay and understood the rules a bit better you would understand that he was actually fouled and obstructed from playing as he was on the ball at the time he was fouled. So stop whinging and get on with the game with the rules of soccer, not aussie rules or rugby....get over it and learn the rules part time soccer fans.
