Slash

Guitar hero Slash doesn’t like playing with himself.

Your new record Slash features guests like Ozzy Osbourne, Fergie and that big-haired bloke from Wolfmother. What was it like getting back into the studio? The whole process was really f—king cool. Just putting the material together, then latching on to all the different singers and doing the sessions.

Do you ever get sick of being the world's best guitarist and wish you were a chimney sweep instead?
It's hard to be sick of being anything if you don’t really think that’s the case. I’m totally a guitar player who’s working as hard as he can to get good at it, and still working at it. I think I have my moments, but there’s so many amazingly more phenomenal guitar player.

What about Guitar Hero – are you any good at that?
All things considered, I suck. I used to be pretty good at it before I actually got involved with those guys and did Guitar Hero III. As soon as they put me in the game it was all too surreal for me and I haven’t played it since.

You’re off the grog now, but what was the best thing to do when you used to party?
Get laid! Are you kidding me? That was basically it – get blitzed and get laid.

Your old Guns N’ Roses mate Axl spent more than a decade on his last album, Chinese Democracy. Were you happy it flopped?
I was happy that he finally put it out, and that was it. It’s been like 15 years since I left the band and there have been periods where there was a lot of resentment going on and animosity. But I don't spend my time dwelling on stuff when it comes to Axl. We don’t have legal issues or anything to fight about, so I’m trying to stop perpetuating all of that negative energy.

It has been a long time.
Yeah. You've got to hand it to a band that’s been more or less split up this long and still manages to keep people’s attention.

Hard to go past Gary Moore. Especially in his early days.
slash. He is without a doubt the best guitarist ever
Adam Jones [Tool] --- The ultimate Riff master Robert Fripp [King Crimson] Slash [Guns] Jimmy Page [LedZep]
Coach, Adelaide, much respect, good list, although I'd probably not have included Eric Clapton, although the rest of your list was fkn spot on, Slash definitely isnt the best guitarist ever, so many others have been so much better for so long
i'm amazed that none of you guy's have mentioned the great angus young, yes ol acdc, one of our best, no 1, too hard depends on your taste in genre, for me my top five, all equal no one is better they are all great, jimi, stevie ray, eric clapton, jimmy page, angus young, cheers
steve lukather best everyone else behind by a large margin
Johnny Marr from the Smiths, i don't think so. If he ever played the guitar, he played 3 chords - the Smiths were the most morbid, Emo stuff of the 80's. Where are they Now???
Slash for sure tops my list for the best guitarist of all time... he is brilliant. I got my first Gunners album 'Appetite for Destruction' when I was 10 years old (thinking back it might have a little inappropriate at that age) but I loved it and have ever since. I was fortunate enough to see GNR live on their Use Your Illusion tour back in January '93 It was Awesome and I will never forget it.. Rock On!
The best guitarist - there's so many. Depends on your music tastes. For blues, Eric Clapton. For rock, Jimmy Page. For psychedelia, Jimi Hendrix. For prog rock, David Gilmour. For speed, Steve Vai. For guitar virtuosity, Tommy Emmannuel. For the beauty of playing, Mark Knopfler. And then where do you fit in Pete Townshend, Joe Satriani, Eddie Van Halen, *** Dale, George Harrison, Yngwie Malmsteen and Slash? So many, so many... and all of them great.
can't go past john frusiante from the chilli peppers as a phenomenal guitar player.....
