Kids think Hitler was a football coach

Monday, November 9, 2009
One in 20 Pommie school students thinks Adolf Hitler was a German football manager.

According to the results of a new survey for a veteran's charity, one in six youngsters believed Auschwitz was a theme park and one in 12 thought the Blitz was a European clean-up after World War II, the UK's Sun reported.

When 2000 kids aged nine to 11 were asked about the two world wars, one in four said they did not think about the soldiers who died.

It's surprising that the kids didn't think Ivan Milat is the Socceroos coach.

The kids interviewed were aged 9-11! Should they know about these things at that age? I think it's more appropriate to cover the subject in High School. It is an important subject, but primary school kids are probably a bit young to be learning about it. I knew a kid in year 7 that was obsessed with Hitler - proclaiming Mein Kampf to be his favourite book. Now that's a little scary!
I always wondered and now i'm sure. We are doomed to repeat our mistakes all over again. Except next time we may not be lucky enough to prevail.
This is what happens when you change an education system that was working, because a certain type of people believe that something didn't happen. So what happens if these kids reckon that it's okay to idolise this person and become like him. Who is going to tell them they are wrong when they have not learnt the correct history. I suppose, going by this, in another ten years or so Saddam Hussan might be a school teacher that was just misunderstood and the Gulf wars never happened.
I wouldn't say it says a lot about the English education system just that children of that age don't necessairly talk about things like that. I would be surprised if any of our children here in Australia of the same age could answer those questions correctly. They will learn about Hitler soon enough as they enter high school.
Now before we start Pommie bashing and I know we all enjoy this past time. Let's ask our kids this question! Do they know who Emperor Hirohito or Prime Minister Tojo was and what relevance to Australia does these gentlemen have. How about what Australian capital city was bombed during WW2. How would our students rate?
In Australian Schools we are told we have a high education system and we are learing what we need to know to survive. Thats bull....I am in grade 11 and currently there is a french girl staying with us and she said she did the same work in grade 7 qand 8. We are that far behind and it is not funny anymore. Teachers are only told what to teach so its the governments fault for not doing much. They want to spend more on education but they should start at the basics again.
