Hospital hand gel stolen by boozehounds

16:00 AEST Wed Mar 4 2009
• Disinfectant hand gel twice as alcoholic as vodka
• Drinking the gel has resulted in deaths

Two hospitals in Staffordshire, England, are removing hand gel dispensers from their wards, after a number have been stolen by alcoholics thirsty for a drink.

The cleanser is 75 per cent alcohol, making it twice the strength of Vodka. It's meant to taste disgusting thanks to a chemical additive, but drinkers haven't been put off.

Reports last year suggested patients were stealing the gel and mixing it with orange juice or cola to make cocktails that packed a serious punch.

Despite warnings from the National Patient Safety Agency, and serious incidents including deaths, people have continued to steal the dispensers and drink the gel.

The fact drinkers are willing to guzzle the toxic cocktail is no real surprise, considering people in the UK actually enjoy downing Fosters.
