A US woman who was shot at point-blank range has her pair of size-D
breast implants to thank for saving her life.
Lydia Carranza was working in a dentist's office in Simi Valley, California, when a man armed with a
semi-automatic rifle entered the premises and started shooting.
He fired directly at her Carranza's chest, where one of her silicone
implants slowed the bullet, stopping fragments from damaging her vital organs.
"She's just one lucky woman," surgeon Dr Ashkan Ghavami told the
Los Angeles Times. "Had she not had the implant, she might not be alive today."
The shooting occurred last year and Dr Ghavami has agreed to perform reconstructive surgery on Carranza for significantly less than his normal fee. The surgeon is trying to get implant companies to donate supplies for the operation.
Scott Reitz, a firearms instructor with 30 years experience in the LAPD, told the
LA Times that Ghavami's claim made sense. Though he did add, "I don't want to say a
boob job is the equivalent of a bulletproof vest. So don't go getting breast enhancements as a means to deflect a possible incoming bullet."
