Blind man turns to kickboxing

Thursday, February 18, 2010
A blind man in Surin province, Thailand, has the eye of the tiger and is making a career out of Thai kickboxing.

28-year-old Sujet Sali grew up as an orphan and is now living in Sikhoraphum district in Surin province.

He had studied to become a traditional Thai masseur but after training at a local gym to become a kick-boxer, he decided hitting people was more satisfying than healing them.

Last October, Sujet fought at a charity boxing event in the 56kg weight-class and knocked out his blindfolded opponent. In four bouts he has had three wins and one draw, and become a favourite of fight fans.

Sujet has earned about 1,000 baht ($34) for each fight while the Disabled Athletes Association in the province has been pitching in to help him with housing and food.

Sujet says he's ready to rumble with anyone who'll face him in blindfolded matches. Anthony Mundine is yet to take up the challenge.

Good on Surjet, at least he's out there making something of his life not sitting on the streets begging. Have a go , they havn't got a welfare system in Thailand so if he dosn't have family to look after him he has to be creative. I think they have blind boxing in the ParaOlympics using a bell on the heads of the boxers or is that what they should do? Anyways I would watch him have a crack at it, wouldn't fight him through he's had more practice at being blind.
