Rose Tattoo legend Angry Anderson talks parties, prostates and pissing on.
This is our Aussie issue, mate. What do you reckon’s good about this country?
One of the things that made us great and keeps us great as a people is, “A fair go for everyone.” That’s a f–king mighty philosophy for a culture to adopt. It’s so Aussie. It’s one of the things that makes us who we are.
You did a tour for Aussie soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan last April. Did you get an insight into what our defence force is doing over there?
I’ve done three tours of the Middle East and from what I’ve seen our force is the most loved and respected of all the occupational troops over there – same as we were in Vietnam. Australians have a great tradition of soldiering when it comes to, “Don’t f–k with us, ’cos we know how to do it, and we know how to do it properly.”
Fair enough. When did you first get into motorcycles?
My Uncle Ivan rode a motorbike, played drums in a swing band, wore a leather jacket, smoked cigarettes and drank beer – he was every boy’s hero. I wasn’t even five-years-old but I remember it so well. I used to sit on the tank between his legs and I’d hang onto this bag-rack with my little goggles on and I just developed a love affair with cycles.
What’s the best party Rose Tattoo ever had?
Some of the best have been in biker clubhouses because you could take anything you liked, drink anything you liked, there was always plenty of girlies around and you didn’t have to worry about anyone looking over your shoulder. Overseas, we had some great parties when we were out with ZZ Top and Aerosmith. Those guys and other bands, they know things about us and we know things about them, but it’s the old code of honour – what happens on the road, stays on the road.
