You Am I champ Tim Rogers is the last real rock star in Australia.
It's no secret you like a drink, mate, but how do you handle
bastard hangovers?
The thing is, I get just as excited about having a cup of tea as I do about a drink. But hangovers...they're not easy. I think I handle them better than most, but not as well as I'd like to. You can go one of two ways - a Jack Black film, or go to the catacombs and confront it head on. I find it an opportunity for deeper introspection than normal.
You were school captain at
Sydney's Oakhill College back in
the day, and you front a couple of
bands. Are you a born leader?
I've got a girlish enthusiasm, but I need and crave time alone too much to be a leader. I've got a very short amount of time that I can be with anybody, so no.
When was the first time you felt
like a rock star?
The first time on stage 1987 - playing in a band in Canberra. The guitar felt great, and it felt good locking in, well sort of locking in, with the band. Or anytime I've taken drugs somewhere you get that little, "Ohhh." That's what people think being a rockstar feels like, rather than the fact it's just drugs coursing through you. But now there's a video game called
Rock Star and T-shirts that say F-k Me I'm a Rock Star that's just dress ups. How silly. Dress up like a pirate that's more fun.
I'm aware that I dress a certain way, but it's really just to take attention away from my nose.
You've met and played with a lot of big rock stars. Who does the
best job of it? Who gets it right?
Keith Richards, of course. When they [the Rolling Stones] bundled into our room, they knew how exciting it is for people to be in their company. They don't tone it down at all. They completely turn it on. But as hard as Keith comes across, I walked away thinking he's possibly the sweetest man I've ever been in the company of.
