Two Italian men recently turned a pink Maserati into a boat and tried to circumnavigate Italy.

Coastguards failed to see the funny side of the adventure and fined Marco Amoretti and Marcolino De Candia nearly $350 because they didn’t have boat rego papers or safety equipment.

The guys said they thought the car's registration would cover them for sailing as well.

The two 50-year-olds had already cruised 8km in the Maserati they called Miriam.

But it wasn’t the blokes first shot at the water-car title – 10 years ago they converted a Ford Cortina and a Volkswagen Passat and travelled across the Atlantic Ocean, from the Canary Islands to Martinica in the Caribbean.
