A bored Chinese labourer has made a 7m submarine kitted out with a TV, monitoring cameras and headlights.
It took a year for Tao Xiangli to hand-build the cramped one-person sub from metal barrels and other improvised parts.
Xiangli says the most difficult challenge he faced was not a lack of knowledge, but of funds. The sub cost $4511 to build, the equivalent of a year's pay for the migrant worker.
"Although the equipment is simple, it's enough for a basic submarine, and more importantly, it enables the passenger to see things clearly underwater," says Xiangli, as reported on
Zhong'an Online.
The 1.6-tonne sub features an oxygen supply and can dive to a maximum depth of 10m. Xiangli will make take his invention for its maiden voyage in Beijing within the next week, and he claims the sub should be quite safe.
Coincidently, the builders of the
Titanic said pretty much the same thing.
