First things first, Kellie – how’s your day going?
Busy, but not bad. I’m a workaholic – I really can’t do sitting still very well.
Can you tell us why you decided to appear in RALPH?
I felt people weren’t seeing me as a woman – they were seeing me as a children’s performer. Which is fine – that’s what I was for 10 years. But this is actually a personal thing. It’s really for myself. Being dressed in kid-friendly clothes for the last 10 years and having everything covered, it made me dress differently outside of work as well. So I just forgot I was a woman, I guess. So really, it was a good way for me to get in touch with myself again and find the woman in me.
But surely you were aware a lot of the Hi-5 audience was smiling dads.
That’s funny, because in the beginning there were just so many mums – it was literally a game of Spot The Dad. Kathleen, Charli and I used to say, “Where are all the dads? They should be here with their kids. It shouldn’t just be a mum thing to do.” But more and more dads started coming along. The dads were really nice. They’d just come backstage with their kids and smile and say hi, but the kids would blurt out, “My dad really likes you!” We’d be like, “Thanks, but you’ve just totally embarrassed your dad.” They’d go red.
What about your own embarrassing moments? Any wardrobe malfunctions?
No, there were no Janet Jackson
wardrobe malfunctions for us. Just basic, normal, everyday things, like you forget a line or fall on stage. Or you see someone get flattened by a wing that happens to be flying around on stage. You gasp and wonder if you should help them or keep entertaining. You’re torn between a friend that could be possibly badly injured and playing up to the audience.
Stuff like that would drive you to drink. Did you ever have to work with a hangover?
One time we had a massive awards night – it was the Logies or the ARIAs – and we had to be at work early the next day doing shows. When I have a drink it doesn’t take me much before I get a
hangover. Especially when it’s red wine – I can get an instant headache on red wine.
What sort of girl are you – steak and beer at the pub, or fancy restaurant and cocktails?
I grew up playing sport. At school I was athletics champion. My whole life revolved around sport. So I’m pretty much the girl that would go down on a Sunday and have a nice glass of wine with a meal at the pub. I’m not into fancy restaurants and things like that. It’s nice to do it every now and again to spoil yourself, but I’m more of a down-to-earth girl.
