A step-by-step guide on how to drink a yard glass of ale like a pro!
1. A full yard is almost three pints, so you want to have some food in your stomach, but also make sure you haven’t eaten anything for about three to four hours so you can fit all that beer in. If your yard is filled with very cold ale, create a distraction in order to let it warm up just a little.
2. Slowly tip the glass back. Don’t hold the yard at too great an angle too early. You might feel like you could handle more during the first few mouthfuls, but remember there will be a rush of lager as soon as air enters the trick bulb at the bottom of the glass.
3. Slowly spin the glass while you drink. This improves the flow of ale down the yard, and it also takes your mind off the fact that your stomach feels like it’s about to explode.
4. When you’re finished, look around you. If there’s no beer on the floor, lean back on the bar and bask in the admiration of friends and punters. If you’ve done all this in under five seconds, call Bob Hawke and tell him you’re hot on his heels. If he’s not in, leave a message.
