As stunt coordinator for Fast and Furious, Mike Gunther is slow and relaxed.
What's the best stunt in Fast and Furious?
Maybe the Parkour sequence, where Paul Walker's going from building to building chasing one of the bad guys. That was exciting.
Does being a stunt coordinator mean you're always?
No. I'm relaxed all the time. I drive slow when I'm not at work. I try to keep safe all the time. But the job has its moments of stress because you want everyone else to go home safe.
What's your all-time favourite stunt?
There's a sequence from Police Story where Jackie Chan's going through a mall. He gets f–king hammered but it's great to watch. I think that definitely raised the bar and makes you want to push the envelope. Every time I see that sequence I go, "Wow, that was f–king fantastic."
Would you like to face off against the Chanster?
I've actually worked with him a couple of times. He's much older than me, so I think early Jackie Chan would've been more exciting, but it was still an honour. The night before I met him I couldn’t sleep because I was so excited. I was like, "Oh man, I hope I'm good enough." And then I get there and I'm like, "Oh f–k, who’s this old guy?" I’m just joking. I just wish I'd met him earlier in my career.
What would your ultimate action movie involve?
Everything. Big wave surfing, skydiving, wrecking as many motorcycles and cars as possible, cigarette boat racing.
Good luck getting the budget approved on that one.
Yeah, exactly. On Fast & Furious we wrecked about 75 cars, which was cool, but it's just one genre of movie. If I had the opportunity to do anything, I'd make XXX on steroids.
You got to trash 75 cars?
Yeah. That's a lot of cars. It's sad because with some of those cars you're like, "F–k, I wish I could take one of these home...but we're gonna wreck it. Come on!" If there's a sequel, maybe they'll give me 100 cars to smash.
